Government Declares January 9 a Public Holiday

The general public has been officially notified of an adjustment to the observance of Constitution Day in 2026. Constitution Day, which is a statutory public holiday in Ghana, falls on Wednesday, 7th January 2026.
In line with existing public holiday regulations, the government has taken steps to ensure that citizens can adequately observe the occasion. Consequently, His Excellency the President of the Republic of Ghana, acting through an Executive Instrument (E.I) and in accordance with Section 2 of the Public Holidays and Commemorative Days Act, 2001 (Act 601), as amended, has declared Friday, 9th January 2026, as a public holiday.
This declaration means that Constitution Day will be observed nationwide on Friday, 9th January 2026, instead of the original Wednesday date. The adjustment is intended to allow broader participation and observance across the country.
All institutions, organizations, and members of the public are therefore advised to take note of this change and observe the day as a public holiday throughout Ghana.
The announcement was officially issued on 2nd January 2026 and signed by the Minister for the Interior, Hon. Muntaka Mohammed-Mubarak, Member of Parliament.
