Cabinet Approves Recruitment of 6,100 Teachers as Education Minister Calls for Calm
Ghana’s education sector is set for a significant boost as the government has approved the recruitment of 6,100 additional teachers to help address longstanding staffing shortages across the country. The announcement was made by the Minister of Education, Haruna Iddrisu, during a media briefing in Accra on Wednesday, November 19.
According to the Minister, education remains the nation’s largest employer, and the government is fully committed to strengthening the system by expanding its workforce. He explained that the latest approval is part of broader efforts to tackle teacher deficits and enhance the quality of teaching and learning in public schools.
The announcement comes at a time when some 2023 teacher trainees have taken to the streets to demand postings and validation of their salaries. Addressing these concerns directly, Mr. Iddrisu assured the public that the entire group of trainees has already been captured in the newly approved recruitment batch.
“I understand that some striking teachers are looking for us on the streets of Accra,” he said. “Let me respond to them that Cabinet has approved the recruitment of 6,100 more teachers, and therefore that category of teachers, which belongs to the 2023 cohort, is adequately captured.”
The Minister expressed surprise at the demonstrations, noting that the trainees involved should instead be engaging with the Ministry to complete important administrative processes. He emphasized that verification, auditing, and identification procedures are essential steps before clearance and salary payments can be finalized.
“I’ll be surprised if it is the same group that is on the street,” he remarked. “They should rather be looking for us and going back to the offices for the purpose of audit and identification, to be reinstated and to be paid.”
Mr. Iddrisu encouraged the striking trainees to return to the appropriate offices to undergo verification. He assured them that the government’s approval demonstrates a genuine commitment to resolving their concerns and integrating them smoothly into the Ghana Education Service.
With the recruitment of thousands of new teachers now underway, stakeholders hope this move will ease pressure on overstretched schools and improve educational outcomes nationwide. The Ministry meanwhile continues to call for cooperation from all affected cohorts to ensure a smooth and transparent placement process.
