Education Ministry Gives Updates on Teacher’s Housing Initiative and Other Reforms

In a significant move to enhance the welfare of educators and strengthen Ghana’s education sector, the Ministry of Education has announced a comprehensive teachers’ housing initiative, backed by President John Dramani Mahama. The programme aims to address longstanding housing and infrastructural challenges that have hindered effective teaching and learning across the country.
The announcement was made by the Minister for Education, Hon. Haruna Iddrisu, during a monitoring visit to West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) centres in Bolgatanga, Upper East Region. Speaking at ZAMSTEC School, Hon. Iddrisu emphasized the government’s commitment to improving teachers’ welfare, stating that the housing initiative is a key component of this effort. “Teachers are the backbone of our education system, and providing them with decent housing is a priority to ensure they can focus on delivering quality education,” he said.
In addition to the housing programme, Hon. Iddrisu revealed that the Ministry has secured policy approval to initiate teacher promotions, with the Public Services Commission (PSC) tasked to oversee the process. This move, he noted, is designed to ensure fairness and transparency while motivating teachers to excel in their roles. “Promotions are not just rewards; they are a recognition of the critical role teachers play in shaping the future of our nation,” the Minister added.
The government’s commitment to transforming the education sector extends beyond teacher welfare. Hon. Iddrisu disclosed plans to invest GH₵1 billion from the Ghana Education Trust Fund (GETFund) into expanding educational infrastructure. This significant investment aims to address the challenges posed by the double-track system, which has long disrupted teaching and learning schedules. By expanding facilities, the Ministry seeks to phase out this system, ensuring a more conducive environment for both students and educators.
The combined interventions—housing, promotions, and infrastructural development—form part of a broader strategy to strengthen Ghana’s education sector. The Ministry of Education underscored that these initiatives reflect the government’s dedication to improving service conditions for teachers and creating an enabling environment for quality education nationwide.
As these reforms take shape, stakeholders in the education sector are optimistic that the initiatives will not only boost teacher morale but also elevate the overall quality of education in Ghana. With President Mahama’s full support, the Ministry is poised to drive meaningful change, ensuring that teachers and students alike benefit from a revitalized education system.
