GES Announces Update on Promotion to Director II and Director I Ranks

The Ghana Education Service (GES) has released an official update regarding the long-awaited promotion process for teachers aspiring to the Director II and Director I ranks. The announcement, issued on January 28, 2026, is directed particularly at officers currently on the Deputy Director rank and the general public.

According to the statement, management of the GES has completed all necessary arrangements to facilitate the promotion of qualified staff to the higher directorate levels. This development marks a significant step in addressing career progression concerns within the service.

The update further reveals that a multi-institutional committee has finalized its work and submitted a comprehensive report to GES management. The committee comprised representatives from the Ghana Education Service, the Public Services Commission, the Fair Wages and Salaries Commission, and PricewaterhouseCoopers. Their involvement was aimed at ensuring transparency, fairness, and technical soundness in the promotion framework.

In addition to the committee’s work, extensive consultations were held with key stakeholders across the education sector. Teacher unions played an active role in the process, providing reviews and inputs that helped shape the final outcomes.

As a result of these efforts, GES management expects that the first call for applications, along with the aptitude test for promotion to Director II and Director I, will be announced before the end of the first quarter of the year. Eligible officers are therefore encouraged to stay alert and prepare accordingly.

One of the most notable aspects of the announcement is the clarification that promotions to these ranks will no longer be tied to the availability of limited office vacancies. This represents a major policy shift from previous practices and aligns with a commitment made by His Excellency John Dramani Mahama to teachers across the country.

GES has assured staff that additional details, including guidelines and timelines, will be communicated in due course through official channels only. Teachers are advised to rely solely on authorized GES communications and disregard unverified information from unofficial sources.

The statement was signed by Daniel Fenyi, Head of Public Relations at the Ghana Education Service, reinforcing its authenticity and immediate effect.
