GNAT Threatens Nationwide School Shutdown Over Attacks on Teachers

The Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT) has issued a stern warning in response to the escalating attacks and assaults on teachers within communities across the nation. The association has expressed grave concern over the rising incidents of violence targeting educators, emphasizing that such acts are severely disrupting the educational process and creating an unsafe atmosphere for teachers to carry out their duties.
During the 7th National Quadrennial Conference held in Accra on January 5, the President of GNAT, Reverend Isaac Owusu, highlighted the disturbing trend of attacks on teachers by both students and members of the communities in which they operate. Reverend Owusu emphasized the urgent need for teachers to be afforded protection and respect in their workplaces, asserting that GNAT will not hesitate to take decisive action if the safety of its members is compromised.
Drawing attention to a recent tragic event in the Garu District of the Upper East Region, Reverend Owusu recounted the heart-wrenching incident where a dedicated teacher and GNAT member, Yahya Bukari, was fatally shot while on duty. He underscored the heroic actions of the late teacher, noting that his intervention had potentially saved the lives of many schoolchildren. Reverend Owusu called for immediate attention and action from authorities regarding the unresolved case, urging a decisive response to address the concerning issue of violence against teachers.
In addition to addressing the safety concerns of teachers, GNAT also used the conference as a platform to advocate for a comprehensive review of the Single Spine Pay Policy. The association expressed dissatisfaction with the current terms of service, deeming them inadequate and unjust for teachers who play a crucial role in shaping the future of the nation.
As GNAT continues to champion the rights and welfare of teachers, the association remains steadfast in its commitment to ensuring a conducive and secure environment for educators to fulfill their essential role in the education sector. The call for action against perpetrator of violence and the demand for improved working conditions underscores GNAT’s unwavering dedication to upholding the rights and well-being of its members.
