GNAT to Reduce Loan Interest Rates to 14% and Increase Loan Thresholds

The Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT) has announced significant adjustments to its loan scheme as part of broader reforms planned for 2026. These changes are aimed at improving member welfare, increasing access to credit, and ensuring the long-term sustainability of the GNAT Fund.

According to information shared, the Fund will roll out several strategic initiatives in the first quarter of 2026. Central to these initiatives is a reduction in loan interest rates to 14 percent, a move widely expected to ease the financial burden on members who rely on GNAT loans for personal and professional needs.

In addition to the interest rate reduction, the Fund has approved an increase in loan thresholds across all major loan categories. This adjustment reflects rising costs of living and the growing financial demands faced by teachers nationwide.

Under the new structure, the Personal Loan ceiling will increase from GH¢40,000 to GH¢50,000, giving members greater flexibility to manage personal expenses. The Investment Capital Loan will also see an upward revision, moving from GH¢50,000 to GH¢60,000, a change intended to support teachers engaged in small-scale businesses and income-generating ventures.

The Habitat Loan, which supports housing-related projects, will rise from GH¢60,000 to GH¢70,000, while the Vehicle Loan will experience the most significant increase, jumping from GH¢70,000 to GH¢100,000. This enhancement is expected to assist members who require reliable transportation for work and personal use.

These reforms demonstrate GNAT’s commitment to enhancing member value while adapting to current economic realities. By lowering interest rates and increasing loan limits, the Association positions its loan scheme as a more accessible and teacher-friendly financial support system.
