Gov’t ready to support teachers with affordable housing through voluntary contributions
The Minister of Education, Haruna Iddrisu, has reaffirmed the government’s commitment to addressing the critical housing challenges faced by teachers across the nation. Speaking at the inauguration of the National Teaching Council (NTC) and the Chartered Institute of Bankers Council on Tuesday, July 15, 2025, Minister Iddrisu proposed the establishment of a voluntary housing fund designed to provide long-term housing security for teachers.
Under this innovative scheme, teachers are encouraged to contribute up to GH¢200 monthly towards the fund, with the government offering matching support. According to Minister Iddrisu, if teachers agree to contribute GH¢200 monthly, and the government adds another GH¢200, it would be possible to develop two or three-bedroom homes. He emphasized that these contributions, when combined with support from pension funds, would serve as collateral to finance the construction of decent housing, particularly for teachers working in rural and underserved communities.
The minister explained that the payments for these homes can be made over time using the pension fund as collateral. This approach ensures that within five to ten years, a teacher can retire with dignity, owning a home and avoiding post-retirement housing insecurity. The initiative aims to ensure that teachers have proper shelter both during active service and after retirement.
This move underscores the government’s recognition of the importance of addressing the housing needs of teachers, who play a pivotal role in shaping the future of Ghana’s education sector. By providing a pathway to affordable housing, the government hopes to improve the welfare of teachers, ultimately contributing to enhanced educational outcomes across the country.
