Teacher in Trouble After Allegedly Caning 11-Year-Old Pupil, Resulting in Visible Bruises

An unfortunate incident has rocked El-Shaddai International School, situated at Mabey between Agbogba and Haatso in Accra, after an 11-year-old pupil was brutally assaulted by a teacher. The young boy, identified as Sylanus Opoku Gyimah, sustained serious bruises on his back, buttocks, and neck following what many have described as an inhumane act of corporal punishment.

According to reports, the ordeal began when Sylanus picked up a piece of rubbish that his teacher, identified as Mr. Iddrisu, had thrown on the ground and quietly placed it under his desk. What was meant to be a simple act of tidiness reportedly infuriated the teacher, who allegedly vowed to “beat him until he needed an ambulance.” Moments later, the threat turned into reality as Iddrisu unleashed a series of lashes on the young boy.

Eyewitness accounts suggest that another teacher, who happened to pass by the classroom, intervened and stopped the assault before the situation could escalate further. Sylanus was left in visible pain and had severe marks across his body as evidence of the incident.

The mother of the victim expressed deep concern and disappointment, revealing that the case had been reported to the police. However, she lamented that no concrete action has yet been taken against the teacher, who continues to teach at the school as though nothing happened. “My son is traumatized, and I still see the marks on his body. I can’t understand how a teacher could be this cruel to a child,” she told Crime Check TV.

When the media outlet reached out to the headteacher, identified as Mr. Edem, he confirmed that the incident indeed occurred but declined to offer further comments. “I am not in the position to speak on the matter,” he said briefly, avoiding questions about disciplinary measures or the welfare of the victim.

The story has since sparked public outrage, with many questioning what could have provoked such extreme behavior from a professional entrusted with the care and education of children. Teachers are expected to guide, protect, and nurture students—not inflict physical harm.

Parents, child rights advocates, and concerned citizens are demanding immediate intervention by the Ghana Education Service (GES) and the police to ensure justice for young Sylanus.
