University of Ghana Fees Cleared by GTEC, No Increase in Facility Charges

The Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC) has recently disclosed the official fee structure for the University of Ghana for the upcoming 2025/2026 academic year. After a period of uncertainty and student unrest regarding fee changes, the Commission’s announcement on Monday, 12 January 2026, brought much-needed clarity.

Under the approved charges, the Academic Facility User Fee will remain consistent with the previous academic year, alleviating concerns of a potential increase. This decision ensures that students will not face additional financial burdens under this particular component of the fees.

In addition to this, the GTEC has outlined other charges that have been formally sanctioned. These include the payment of the Student Representative Council (SRC) dues amounting to GH₵50, an SRC Development Levy of GH₵150, and a Graduate Students’ Association of Ghana (GRASAG) Development Levy of GH₵250. Furthermore, undergraduate students, including new entrants, will be required to pay a Telecel Broadband Levy of GH₵122.

An additional one-time 75th Anniversary Levy of GH₵100 has been introduced for the 2025/2026 academic year. Notably, this levy is specified to be a temporary charge solely applicable for the current academic year and will not be carried forward into subsequent years.

Emphasizing the significance of transparency and student awareness, GTEC has urged the University to ensure that students are well-informed about their rights concerning these levies. Students have been reminded that they are entitled to exercise the option to opt-out of particular charges where permissible under the regulations.

The Commission’s statement stresses the aim of providing clarity and resolving any outstanding concerns regarding the fee structure for the upcoming academic year. GTEC expects the cooperation of all parties involved to facilitate a seamless implementation process.

This development follows a recent directive by the Commission instructing the University to revert all unauthorized fee adjustments. Furthermore, students who have already paid excess amounts are to be either refunded or have the surplus amount credited accordingly.

The initial fee changes, which impacted all colleges within the University, sparked protests among students. University management attributed a substantial portion of the increase to third-party charges associated with student leadership roles, rather than core institutional fees.

With the release of the approved fee schedule, the situation has been effectively addressed, paving the way for a more predictable and transparent fee regime for the 2025/2026 academic year. Students can now proceed with clarity regarding their financial obligations and exercise their rights in accordance with the established regulations.
