[URGENT] GES Issues Update and Guidelines on 2025 Teacher Promotion Examinations

The Management of the Ghana Education Service (GES) has released an official update outlining key guidelines for the conduct of the 2025 Teacher Promotion Examinations. The directive, dated 26th December 2025, provides clarity on the examination schedule, eligibility requirements, shortlisting procedures, and reporting instructions for all teaching staff involved in the promotion exercise.
Examination Schedule Confirmed
GES has confirmed that the promotion examinations will proceed as planned. The examinations are scheduled to take place over two days. On Monday, 29th December 2025, candidates seeking promotion to the ranks of Assistant Director II (AD II) and Principal Superintendent (PS) will write their papers from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon. This will be followed on Tuesday, 30th December 2025, by examinations for Assistant Director I (AD I) and Deputy Director (DD) candidates, also from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon.
Shortlisting Process and Candidate Notification
According to GES, the shortlisting of applicants was conducted strictly based on approved eligibility criteria and the submission of required documentation. As a result, some applications were not considered. All shortlisted candidates have been officially notified via SMS, which contains their Staff ID, Index Number, and designated examination centre.
In addition, the complete list of shortlisted candidates and their index numbers has been made available for verification at Regional Education Offices, Municipal, Metropolitan and District Education Offices, as well as all designated examination centres. GES has further indicated that an updated list of eligible candidates will be circulated to regional offices and examination centres one day before the examinations commence.
Only teachers who have received an official SMS notification or whose names appear on the shortlisted list are permitted to participate in the promotion examinations.
Reporting to Examination Centres
GES has emphasized that only candidates who have been issued index numbers are allowed to report to examination centres. Teachers who have not received an SMS notification and do not have an index number have been instructed not to report to any centre. The examinations will be conducted strictly by index number, and candidates without one will not be permitted to write the paper under any circumstances.
Provision for Special Cases
The Service has made provisions for teachers who may have been inadvertently omitted. Teachers who obtained their last promotion or upgrading in or before 2021, meet all qualification requirements, and applied for the current promotion but did not receive an SMS or find their names on the shortlisted list are required to take action.
Such affected teachers must submit a copy of their last promotion or upgrading letter, along with evidence or a printout confirming their application for the current promotion, to their respective Regional Education Offices. This process will allow GES to verify and address any genuine cases of omission.
Requirements on Examination Day
On the day of the examination, candidates are required to present a valid National Identification Card at their examination centres. They must also ensure that their Staff ID and Index Number are clearly indicated on all examination scripts.
Enquiries and Compliance
Teachers who experience difficulties or require clarification are advised to contact GES through text message, WhatsApp, or voice call on 0550326931, or via email at gespromotionexams@gmail.com. Management has urged all candidates to strictly comply with the outlined guidelines to ensure a smooth, transparent, and well-coordinated promotion exercise.
GES has stressed that any further updates or communications regarding the promotion examinations will be issued exclusively through official GES channels.
The statement was signed by Prof. Smile Dzisi (Mrs.), Acting Deputy Director-General (Management Services), on behalf of the Acting Director-General of the Ghana Education Service, with copies sent to key stakeholders within the Ministry of Education and GES leadership.
