John Mahama appoints Haruna Iddrisu as Education Minister-designate

President John Dramani Mahama has nominated Haruna Iddrisu, the Member of Parliament for Tamale South, as the new Minister of Education.

A statement released on Thursday, January 16, 2025, and signed by the Acting Spokesperson for the President, Felix Ofosu Kwakye, highlighted that Iddrisu’s nomination reflects his extensive political experience and proven leadership.

As Minister of Education, Iddrisu will be tasked with addressing key educational challenges, particularly the growing concerns surrounding the implementation of the Free SHS policy.

He is expected to take a results-oriented approach, prioritizing solutions to critical issues such as access to quality education, teacher welfare, and curriculum reform.

Additionally, he will oversee the implementation of the government’s commitment to providing free tuition for first-year university students, among other educational initiatives.

Haruna Iddrisu, born September 8, 1970, is a Ghanaian lawyer, politician, football enthusiast and owner of Karela United and Steadfast Football clubs owner. He served as the Minority Leader for NDC in Ghana’s Parliament from January 2017 and was succeeded by Dr Cassiel Ato Forson. 

Over the years, Haruna Iddrisu has championed numerous legislative initiatives aimed at fostering inclusive growth. The nomination of Haruna Iddrisu will be subject to parliamentary vetting and approval.

His appointment underscores the Mahama administration’s broader strategy of aligning experienced leaders with key portfolios to deliver on campaign promises. It follows other high-profile nominations, such as Kwame Governs Agbodza for the Ministry of Roads and Highways and Agnes Naa Momo Lartey for the Ministry of Gender, Children and Social Protection.
